The story of The Half of It may be recognizable to viewers as a retelling of Cyrano, and the coming of age aspect of the film makes it universally relatable, but Ellie's storyline is one not often seen in Hollywood movies. Rostand's Cyrano De Bergerac is written about a time that no one alive now has experienced. There is the same plot idea that an ugly man wants the pretty girl, but she is too busy being infatuated with the pretty boy to notice the intellect of the man she truly comes to love.
Cyrano’s Nose. Cyrano’s nose is the most obvious symbol in the play. Not only does it make him ugly, it characterizes Cyrano’s main flaw: his lack of self-confidence and initiative in potential encounters with love, and the deceptive actions he commits as a consequence of this low self-esteem. His nose is the barrier between him and love.

Writer-director Alice Wu took inspiration from her own best friendship with a straight guy when she was first coming out of the closet, and Ellie and Paul emerge as the film’s most compelling pair (and Diemer as Wu’s best acting find). His uncomplicated worldview provides an endearing counterbalance to her internalized anxieties. Yet the Cyrano-style wooing shenanigans too often pull focus.
